Is a painting ever really finished?

Beneath this painting is another one. One I wasn’t pleased with. So I painted over it.

That’s one of the things I love about acrylics—you can begin again without necessarily starting over.

And maybe that’s what I love most about this piece.

We often think a blank canvas is the perfect place to begin. Clean. Untouched. Without mistakes. But what if the used canvas—with all its imperfections, old brushstrokes and layers—is actually capable of becoming something even more beautiful?

The painting underneath Weathered Grace hasn’t disappeared. Its texture is still there. Its marks became part of the foundation. What I once considered unsuccessful helped create the depth of what came next.

And isn’t life so much like that?

God doesn’t need a blank canvas to make something beautiful. He uses the layers already there—the joys, disappointments, detours, mistakes and seasons that have weathered us. Somehow, through grace, He takes all of it and continues creating.

Maybe that’s weathered grace: not beauty in spite of all we’ve been through, but a deeper beauty shaped by it.

Perhaps a painting is never really finished.

Perhaps neither are we.
