I can remember as a little girl the anticipation I felt knowing our week at the beach was quickly approaching. The week was always filled with lots of beach time, hunting for shells, crabbing off the old pier and eating some of the best seafood the lowcountry had to offer. It was a week reserved every summer to visit our little island with my Mom’s side of the family. My mom had been doing the same each summer since she was a little girl.
I didn't know it at the time but I had made mental snapshots of the marsh when we would cross over the causeway. This three mile stretch that crossed over five bridges and the most pristine marshland will forever be etched in my mind.
Most of the trip, I would have slept, but as soon as I knew we had turned onto the causeway something in me awakened. Life slowed down. We cranked the windows and breathed into our lungs that first sweet smell of the marsh. There is a sweetness mixed in with the saltiness of the water and pluff mud. It gave me hope.
Springtime might just be my favorite time to visit the marsh. The brown Spartina slowly leaves the marsh with every ebb and flow of the tides. Then it turns every color of green you can imagine.
I once heard that the marsh is the birthplace of the lowcountry. There is a renewing spirit I get walking over the boardwalk. Seeing the new growth bursting forth. Isn’t that what we want? We want the year behind us washed back out the sea. Sifting us, cleansing us. We live in hope of the promise that a new season is being born with each passing day.
Springtime in the Marsh is my mental snapshot I share with you. I hope it brings you a sense of belonging and a connection to the world around you.
Unexpected Growth

I have always found oysters fascinating. I love the pearly white insides and the deep purple hues of where it once was attached to a living creature. Every one a treasure coughed up from the sea, or a restaurant for that matter. It's become the running joke of my husband and I. He says I can’t sneak anymore shells when we leave a restaurant or oyster roast, not because I have enough in my collections, but maybe one or two have been forgotten in my purse through the years.
I have usually painted the inside of these beautiful shells, but lately, the outside has caught my eye. The outside of the shell shows the growth of an oyster, similar to that of the rings in a tree. I love the depth, texture and color in each curve of the ring.
Growth. We all have a growing season. Some cold, long, scarred-we show the signs of each lesson in each twist and turn of life. Others, the lessons we learn quickly, the signs aren’t as visible to the eye, but it's there. Life experiences, seasons, perspective. I am thankful for each one. Unexpected at times, but God has used all of it for good. Some I hold close. I examine, question. Others I share, hoping that my story will only encourage their own.
I'm glad I don't have a perfect linear view of my life laid out. Instead, I'm grateful that there is purpose in the days and I set my hope on eternity. Our lives are beautiful, scarred and all. It all shows growth.
Ecclesiastes 3:11 He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the human heart; yet[a] no one can fathom what God has done from beginning to end.

These are the colors of the Lowcountry marsh, where deep browns and greens intertwine to create a tapestry of natural beauty. The earthy browns of the rich soil and weathered wood contrast with the lush greens of the marsh grass. This vivid palette is complemented by the expansive sky, often tinged with the salty hues of ocean air, ranging from soft grays to vivid blues.
As the sun rises and sets, these colors shift, reflecting the changing light and the rhythm of the tides. The interplay of shadows and brightness invites a deeper appreciation for the untouched landscapes. Here, time seems to slow, allowing for moments of reflection and connection with the beauty of the natural world. The Lowcountry marsh serves not only as a visual feast but also as a reminder of the harmony that exists in nature.$400.00

After a long day at the beach, with sun-kissed faces and new memories tucked into our memory banks, my family and I will settle in on the porch and enjoy what we like to call jukebox night. The rules are this, anyone can pick a song, no one can complain, and you have to listen to the song in its entirety. More than once, I select “Sailing”, by Christopher Cross.
A true sailboat only works if there is wind. It purpose is to take you places that the wind can carry you. This painting is a reminder, that I have to release the sails, open up the canvas and trust that what is out there is far greater that sitting content in the harbor.
“sailing takes me away to where I’ve always heard it could be, just a dream and the wind to carry me…soon I will be free”

An interesting thing about painting is finding what works for you and how to achieve different effects and textures that you want to incorporate into your paintings. When I first started painting, I realized that I wanted to show the textures of a shell, but I wasn’t quite sure how to achieve that goal.
To capture the unique surface of a shell, I experimented with various techniques. I learned that using a palette knife could create the needed dimensionality, while layering different shades of color helped to replicate the natural variances found in shells.
I also discovered that using a dry brush technique allowed me to mimic the delicate ridges and grooves. Each attempt taught me more about the materials I was working with and deepened my understanding of how color and texture can transform an image.
But here’s the really special secret: I add sand from the very beach where I have found these treasures. I love the depth and richness it adds to each piece. Taking a small vial of that unique sand, each grain tells a story of the ocean's tides and the memories held within. When combined with the treasures I collect—shells, sea glass, and bits of driftwood—it creates a tangible connection to that place. Every item isn't just an object; it's infused with the essence of the beach itself, evoking the warmth of the sun, the sound of the waves, and the gentle caress of the sea breeze. This simple addition transforms the ordinary into something extraordinary, creating art that resonates with both the heart and the soul.
